Carlsbad, Calif.  –  The defending Mylan World TeamTennis champion San Diego Aviators have signed Coco Vandeweghe, ranked No. 21 in the world, to play in their home match on Tuesday, July 25 at 7 p. m. (PT) against the Orange County Breakers at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

The 25-year-old Vandeweghe, a resident of nearby Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., made her WTT debut in 2009 and has played a total of seven seasons. This year, she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in January and achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 19 in the world in May. She also reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

“I love to play in front of my home crowd and my family and friends. World TeamTennis is a great atmosphere and a great moment for me in the summer hard court season,” said Vandeweghe as she watched the Aviators defeat the Springfield Lasers earlier this week. “I enjoy the team camaraderie. It will be a fun time. It feels great to be back and I’ll be ready to play for my home city in San Diego.”

Vandeweghe will feel right at home on Stadium Court at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. In 2006, she made her main draw debut at age 14 when the venue hosted a Women’s Tennis Association tournament. Four years later, Vandeweghe reached the singles quarterfinals of the WTA event in Carlsbad in 2010 as a qualifier.

“It’s going to be a spectacular night next Tuesday with Coco in the lineup. With her powerful game and her intensity on the court, the atmosphere is going to be electric,” said San Diego Aviators General Manager Jim Ault. “I encourage fans to get their tickets as soon as possible.”
