Youngsters On The Rise In The WTA

Mar 30th 2018

Few expected Japanese teen prodigy Naomi Osaka to lift the title at the Indian Wells Masters.

Many more did not anticipate two youngsters on the women’s tennis circuit to reach the finals of a Tier 1 tournament on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

It seems like the rise of youngsters on the pro tour circuit is not limited to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Naomi Osaka

En route to her first title in her career, Osaka defeated multiple renowned and higher ranked players, including former world number one Russian Maria Sharapova, Czech Karolina Pliskova, and reigning number one Simona Halep.

It was no easy feat for a youngster who has never made it past the quarterfinals of a Premier Mandatory tournament.

While this may come as a surprise to some, it is a concurrent trend ongoing for a few seasons now, albeit inconsistently.

Strange enough, the women's game is known to produce multiple surprises and instances of inconsistency even in the best of players.

Daria Kasatkina

One of the most relevant cases would be the rise of Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. Her rise to a career-high ranking of fifth in the world in 2014 would be the significant milestone in her career. However, she would soon plummet to a career ranking of outside the top 100 in January 2018 after poor performances in numerous consecutive tournaments.

Naomi Osaka and Daria Kasatkina are not the only youngsters rising and gunning for ranking points. American teen Sachia Vickery and Elina Svitolina are just some of the new faces on the tour that are clawing their way to the top rungs of the rankings. Let's just hope that their play will not be dominated by just powerful groundstrokes and fast serves, but also consistent play and wins to keep the popularity and future of tennis bright.

Hopefully, tennis fans will then have something and someone to cheer for in the long-run besides the William sisters, Sharapova or other seasoned players on the tour.
