Wimbledon: Murray, Nadal Roll While Wawrinka Falls

Jul 3rd 2017

It took very little time before a major upset was registered on the opening day in London. 5th-seeded and three-time grand slam titlist Stan Wawrinka fell to Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Centre Court.

A confident Medvedev never appeared nervous, nor an underdog as he struck big serves and solid groundstrokes throughout the match. He was aided by a knee injury that may have slowed Wawrinka down, but the Russian deserves major credit for maintaining his course particularly after the Swiss fought back to take the second set.

After the win, Medvedev kissed the grass court and later stated, “A year ago I was ranked 250. If someone told me in one year I would win on Centre Court I would tell you you are joking.”

Wawrinka will have to wait until next year to pursue a career grand slam as he has titles at Melbourne, Paris and New York. He addressed his knee injury afterward, “I had some problem with the knee with Queen’s, so that was not the way I wanted to get ready for this tournament,” Wawrinka said. “Today was tough. I was expecting to feel a little bit better. It is something I had in the past. Since I had that problem, this was the first time playing on grass. Apparently, grass is not the best surface for my knee.”

Meanwhile, top-seeded Andy Murray and four-seed Rafael Nadal advanced with routine wins. Murray dispatched Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 and Nadal blew by John Millman 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.  Both players are seeking their third Wimbledon title. Murray hopes to defend his 2016 championship.

The Brit, who entered Wimbledon nursing a hip injury, was asked about his status and whether he showed stiffness when he walked, “I don’t know if that’s something that’s come over the last couple of weeks when my hip’s been sore. I’ve always done it, and everyone is sort of saying that I’m walking that way because of my hip. I’m not in a lot of pain when I’m walking, that’s for sure. I’m certainly not hurting between the points. My hip felt good. It’s a little bit sore but I was moving really good today.”

He will face Dustin Brown in the second round.

Rafael Nadal

Nadal, who won his tenth Roland Garros title last month, appeared to have picked up where he left off in Paris as he controlled the match from the outset.  He was pleased with his performance, “It was a very positive match for me, a good start… I am through to the second round. That's a very important thing for me. And I happy because I didn't win a lot of matches the last couple of years here in Wimbledon. Today I win one, and I am looking forward to play the second one,” he said.

The Spaniard will face American Donald Young next, on Wednesday.
