Wimbledon Day 2 WTA Recap: Serena, Sharapova, Halep Cruise

Jun 24th 2014

As the first round of women’s action concluded at Wimbledon, most of the expected names notched successful starts to their campaigns.

Favorites Cruise

The top women who were in action on Tuesday had little trouble in moving on to the second round. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep, and Agnieszka Radwanska all grabbed early strangleholds on their first-round matches and advanced with ease.

Top seed Williams took her first step in atoning for her sub-par French Open performance, defeating Anna Tatishvili 6-1 6-2. In a match that lasted just 61 minutes, a focused Williams fired 16 aces. She had not played on grass this season and looked cautious in finding her bearings on the surface. However, once she located her footing, the world No. 1 showed no mercy on Tatishvili.

Maria Sharapova

Meanwhile, French Open champion Maria Sharapova made quick work of Samantha Murray 6-1 6-0 to advance. The fifth seed won nearly twice as many points as her opponent and disposed of the 26-year-old Brit in less than an hour.

Afterwards, Sharapova reflected on playing back-to-back Grand Slams. “It's such a quick turnaround,” she said. “You just want to be physically rested but also have enough preparation and practice going into Wimbledon. It's a thin line. But I've recovered mentally and physically.”

Elsewhere, the fourth-seeded Radwanska played a clean match with just six unforced errors, advancing past Romanian Andreea Mitu 6-2 6-1. Like Williams and Sharapova, Radwanska needed minimal time to earn her victory. She finished off Mitu in 48 minutes.

Likewise, third seed Simona Halep rolled past Teliana Pereira 6-2 6-2. The French Open finalist struck 19 winners while forcing 24 errors from her opponent in the match. She will move on in pursuit of her first Grand Slam title after coming so close at Roland Garros.

Bouchard Eliminates Crafty Veteran

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard received a stern test from veteran Daniela Hantuchova but prevailed 7-5 7-5 on Tuesday. The 13th seed was forced to rally from a 3-1 deficit in the first set but fought her way back to take the set despite struggles with her serve. It was more of the same in the second set as Hantuchova continued to fight hard, pushing the young Canadian.

“I expected a tough match, and it was a tough one,” said Bouchard. “I definitely feel like I didn't play my best most of the match, but I competed when it counted and raised my level at some big points.”

Bouchard is the only woman to have made the semifinals at both the Australian Open and French Open, but she admitted that she felt some jitters on Tuesday. “The first match of a tournament, especially a Grand Slam, is always a bit nervy. I think there was a bit of nervous tennis out there.”

Nonetheless, Bouchard battled her way through and will face Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the second round.

Jelena Jankovic

Jankovic, Errani Fall

Two other seeds saw their visit to London end swiftly as Jelena Jankovic and Sara Errani both fell in the first round. Jankovic was clipped by Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3 6-2 as the No. 7 seed. Kanepi struck 28 winners en route to her victory.

Meanwhile, 14th seed Errani fell at the hands of Carolina Garcia of France 2-6 7-6 7-5. Garcia imposed her aggressive style on the Italian, striking 78 winners despite giving away 65 unforced errors in the three-set match. She also was aided by seven aces.
