Wimbledon ATP Day 8 Recap: Federer Cruises, Nadal Stunned

Jul 1st 2014

Archrivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer met contrasting fates at Wimbledon as the rest of the men's quarterfinal lineup took shape.

Nick Kyrgios

Nadal Shocked

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, made his exit at Wimbledon after a shocking defeat to Nick Kyrgios. The 19-year-old took down the 14-time Grand Slam champion 7-6 (5) 5-7 7-6 (5) 6-3. A surprisingly confident Kyrgios looked comfortable on the big stage, firing massive serves and groundstrokes with plenty of flair. The young Australian served a remarkable 37 aces and struck 70 winners in the four-set match, an amazing display given the venue and his legendary opponent.

You’ve got to believe you can win the match from the start, and I definitely believed that,” Kyrgios stated afterwards. The world No. 144 was given a wild-card entry into Wimbledon and certainly has taken advantage of it. Nadal was never able to gain a handle on the Australian's serve, and Kyrgios showed poise in taking both tiebreaks. Seldom do you find the Spaniard overpowered on the court, but that was the reality on Centre Court on Tuesday.

Despite early-round exits at Wimbledon in the last three years, Nadal was upbeat afterwards. “I fought until the end in every single match. I was able to play some good tennis on this surface, and that's something I've not been able to do in the last two years. In a way, I am not even angry today because I lost the match while losing my serve only once in the whole match. I created my opportunities, but I was not able to read his serve.”

Kyrgios will advance to face 8th-seeded Milos Raonic, who defeated 10th seed Kei Nishikori 4-6 6-1 7-6 6-3

Roger Federer

Federer Cruises to Quarterfinals

Roger Federer advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 6-4 6-4 win over Tommy Robredo in a match that lasted just an hour and 34 minutes. As has been the case throughout the fortnight, Federer continued to protect his serve and denied any breaks. Robredo was given just one break point in the match. The seven-time Wimbledon Champion showed surgical skill in taking apart the 23rd seed. The victory exacted revenge for a loss to the Spaniard at last season's U. S. Open.

Federer feels his game is where it needs to be. “I am very happy,” he said. “I was able to start off strong, and I kept up momentum. I’m serving well, moving well, returning all right, and physically I am in tip-top shape – all the things are happening for me to do well. I feel my game is right there.”

However, the road for Federer will become increasingly more difficult as he faces his friend and fellow Swiss star Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. Wawrinka defeated Feliciano López 7-6 (5) 7-6 (7) 6-4. Federer knows his countryman and Australian Open champion will be up to the task. “For him the dynamic has changed a lot,” he replied. “He definitely shows up for the big moments, and he believes he can come through them, because before he lost lot of close matches against many of the top guys.”

Wawrinka has only defeated Federer twice in 15 attempts, both times in Monte Carlo.
