Wawrinka Ends Del Potro Run, Advances to Semifinals

Sep 8th 2016

In a rematch from Wimbledon, Stan Wawrinka met Juan Martin Del Potro in the late match in Arthur Ashe Stadium. This time, it was Wawrinka who came out on top with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

Del Potro was quick out of the gate as he confidently put Wawrinka on the defensive early and earned a service break.  But the three-seed found his wheels midway through the set, broke back and forced a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Del Potro uncharacteristically misfired on his signature forehand and he opened the door for the three-seed. Wawrinka took advantage of the mistakes and closed out the first set. Both players received visits from the trainer for nagging issues but neither player appeared to show signs of physical struggles.

Play heated up in the second set and both players were stingy during their service games. Del Potro began to find some success at the net and pressured the Swiss. And with Wawrinka serving at 3-3, the Argentine broke serve. Later in the set, with Del Potro serving at 5-4, he overcame 3 successful challenges by Wawrinka and an overrule to take the set.

At the beginning of the third set, both players appeared to manage their energy with pedestrian play. However, in the 8th game, Wawrinka began to pressure Del Potro as he served at 3-4 and gained the first break opportunity of the set. The Argentine attempted to fight him off but a couple of untimely double faults and perhaps showing some tired legs, he dropped serve. Wawrinka would win the set on his racket.

Between sets, the trainer briefly treated Del Potro’s shoulder but there was no delay in action. However, as it appeared he had hit a wall, Del Potro quickly lost his serve in the opening game of the fourth set. Clearly beginning to run out of energy, the New York crowd attempted to pick up the 27-year old. As the match passed the 1 a. m. mark, fans began chanting Del Potro’s name, bringing tears to his eyes and delaying the match. But there was nothing left in the tank as Wawrinka ran out the final set, with little difficulty, for the win.

Wawrinka reflected on his win afterward, “It was important to stay there, to stay tough. I knew before the match that against del Potro it's a tough challenge. He's playing well. He's strong mentally. He doesn't give you much,” he said.

Meanwhile, despite the loss, Del Potro underscored his appreciation for the fortnight, “This tournament is great for me,” he said. “I always love to play in New York. Of course, I have great memories from 2009, but now my person is completely different, now my life is different. I have a different game. I’m getting older. Everything is like new for me, like a new career after my third surgery. I enjoy even more when I get into the courts than years ago. I just want to play tennis in front of the big crowds.”
