US Open WTA Day 9: Peng, Wozniacki Reach Semifinals

Sep 2nd 2014

Two matches in the women’s draw led to two semifinal berths at the U. S. Open. Both turned out to be no contests as two competitors playing at the top of their games advanced. Here is a look at action today from Flushing Meadows.

Peng Shuai

Peng Continues to Roll

One of the real stories of the women’s draw has been the performance of Shuai Peng, who despite playing arguably the most consistent tennis of the tournament, has flown under the radar. On Tuesday, she became the first player into the semifinals, ending the run of 17-year-old Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-1.

The veteran, who has made a name for herself in doubles, overpowered the young Swiss with her consistently clean play, resulting in 24 winners to just sevn unforced errors in the match. Peng has seized the opportunity to dictate play throughout the tournament and was able to pressure Bencic, who committed 19 unforced errors.

For the first time in the tournament, Bencic could find no answer to her opponent’s weapons, and Peng closed out the lopsided affair in just over an hour. With the victory, the 28-year-old from China will move on to her first Grand Slam semifinals singles match, where she will face Caroline Wozniacki.

After the match, the unseeded and emotional Peng admitted that she had given thought to leaving the sport before. “This is an amazing time for me.” she said. “A lot of tennis. It's a long time, the career. It's tough sometimes. I was thinking to give up and stop play because I don't know if I can make it or not. My coach and my parents always tell me to try to keep going and never ever give up.”

The end result of her decision to continue is a legitimate opportunity to advance to a Grand Slam final.

Caroline Wozniacki

Wozniacki Rolls to Semifinals

In the nightcap in Ashe Stadium, 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki met 13th seed Sara Errani. In a match that lasted just over an hour, Wozniacki cruised to the semifinals with a 6-0 6-1 victory.

With a tricky wind at her back, Errani lost serve in her opening service game, giving the Dane an early advantage in the first set. Wozniacki quickly made adjustments on the serve and appeared to have more control with the wind than her opponent. The Italian continued to struggle as Wozniacki rolled to a bagel.

In the second set, Errani gained a quick break, but that dissipated quickly as Wozniacki turned the set into her favor and rattled off six consecutive games, rolling to the victory and the semifinals.

Errani never appeared to find a handle on the windy conditions and struggled on her service games. The Italian won less than 20 percent of her first-serve points, although she placed 82 percent of those serves in play. Meanwhile, Wozniacki struck 26 winners despite the conditions on the court.
