US Open WTA Day 2: Serena, Kvitova Cruise; Bellis Stuns

Aug 26th 2014

Day 2 saw the continuation of first-round action in the women’s draw. Much as on Monday, most of the favorites were victorious. However, not every outcome went according to plan.

High Seeds Find Success

Top seed Serena Williams, third seed Petra Kvitova, seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard, and eighth seed Ana Ivanovic rolled to wins on Tuesday.

Williams headlined the night session against American Taylor Townsend and came away with a businesslike win, 6-3 6-1. The five-time U. S. Open Champion dominated her service games while profiting from Townsend’s 20 unforced errors. She capitalized on the left-hander's struggling serve and did not face a break point in the match on her serve.

Petra Kvitova

In other results, Wimbledon champion Kvitova dropped just one game on her way to a 6-1 6-0 victory against Kristina Mladenovic of France. In a match that lasted just 54 minutes, the Czech overpowered her opponent behind her big serve and allowed just three winners off Mladenovic's racket.

Kvitova avoided her 2011 first-round exit at the US Open that followed her first Wimbledon title. Looking much more comfortable with higher expectations, Kvitova put things into perspective. “I'm really motivated to do well here. I remember 2011 when I lost my first round after winning Wimbledon, so I'm just glad that I'm better already.”

Meanwhile, Bouchard who has advanced to at least the semifinals in all three Grand Slams this season, is looking to rebound from her struggles following her Wimbledon final loss to Kvitova. On Tuesday, she took very little time ironing out any rough patches and defeated Olga Govortsova 6-2 6-1.

Bouchard acknowledged her recent difficulties but has her goal in sight. “I want to kind of get on a roll and keep the momentum going,” she said.

Elsewhere, Ivanovic who played well during the U. S. Open Series, continued her stellar form by eliminating American Alison Riske, 6-3 6-0. Ivanovic took advantage of Riske’s 17 unforced errors and broke serve six times in the match.

Ivanovic, who has become one of the favorites, is happy with her recent play. “Last year has been an amazing change for me. I learned a lot about myself, about my goals, who I am as a person and who I want to be.”

Shocking Win for Bellis, Solid Day for Young Americans

It was a successful day for some of the rising young Americans on their home courts Tuesday. One such success came at the hands of 15-year-old Catherine Bellis, who eliminated Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova, 6-1 4-6 6-4. Bellis became the youngest player to win a match at Flushing Meadows since Anna Kournikova in 1996.

The world No. 1208 showed poise in the third set, rallying from a break deficit and closing out the 12th seed. Bellis earned a wild card entry into the U. S. Open after her USTA girls 18s National Championship and ignited the pro-American crowd, who hung on every shot off of the youngster's racket.

Bellis appeared stunned at her own success following the match. “I went into the match thinking it was going to be such a great experience, but I never thought I would come out on top winning,” she said. “Words can't describe it right now. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to think of it better.”

Madison Keys

In other action, 27th-seeded Madison Keys advanced in straight sets against Jarmila Gajdosova, while Christina McHale won a third-set tiebreak over Chanelle Scheepers to move into the second round.

Coco Vandeweghe also continued her breakout season with a comeback victory against Donna Vekic. Meanwhile, former NCAA national champion Nicole Gibbs from Stanford eliminated Caroline Garcia, 6-2 2-6 6-3.

It was Shelby Rogers and Vania King joining veteran American Varvara Lepchenko in the second round after victories on Tuesday. King upset former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in three sets to add to United States success on Day 2
