US Open: Osaka Dominates Defending Champion Kerber

Aug 29th 2017

While rain interrupted play on most courts on Tuesday afternoon, in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Naomi Osaka dispatched defending champion Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-1.

It took the 19-year-old from Japan just over an hour to eliminate Kerber as she pelted the former world no. 1 with her big serve and groundstrokes. The German found herself on the defensive throughout the match as Osaka dictated play.

The match was even at 3-3 in the first set when the flood gates opened for the teen. She lost just one more game in the match as she found her stride in impressive fashion.

Osaka struck 22 winners in the match and attacked Kerber’s second serve. She would break Kerber four times in the match as the veteran won just 37 percent of her second serves.

Much was made of Osaka’s collapse in New York a year ago when she held a 5-1 lead in the final set against Madison Keys but lost the match. She addressed that afterward, “It means a lot, especially since last time I was here. This court has not given me fond memories but hopefully, this overtakes that. When it was 4-1 today I was thinking, 'I really hope I don't do what I did last year' and that let me focus a lot.”

And focus she did as she refused to take the foot off the pedal. Her attacking style forced 23 unforced errors from Kerber.

It was the first win against a top-10 opponent by the world no. 45 who will play again on Thursday.
