US Open ATP Day 4: Djokovic, Murray Solid; Kyrgios Impresses

Aug 28th 2014

Day 4 at the US Open was business as usual, along with the two American men winning their matches in straight sets. While neither Sam Querrey nor John Isner is expected to come anywhere near winning this tournament, it was a refreshing sight for American tennis fans to see at least the top two Americans (in talent, if not current ranking) performing as fans hope they can.

Novak Djokovic

Honor Roll:

Novak Djokovic (defeated Mathieu 61 63 60)- Djokovic is still not up to the highest levels that he has shown this year, let alone a few years ago. There's still something missing from his game this summer. He's getting better, though, and it is encouraging to see that he has started to shake off whatever was keeping his game down in Toronto and Cincinnati. Still, he needs to pick up a few levels if he wants to win this tournament.

Sam Querrey (defeated Garcia-Lopez 63 64 64)- What a difference a round makes. Querrey was brutally efficient today, getting one break in each set with massive groundstokes and backing up his serve beautifully. If he can sustain this level for another match (which, unfortunately, is not so likely given his recent results) he could present a real challenge to Djokovic in the next round.

Andy Murray (defeated Bachinger 63 63 64)- Murray was still far from his best this match.  But compared to his first-round match, this was definitely a step in the right direction. Murray stayed on point all match and avoided the weird lull that he had in the first round. He looks like he needs to play his way into this tournament, but he is giving himself a chance to do it.

Nick Kyrgios (defeated Seppi 64 76 64)- Someday very soon it will stop surprising us when Kyrgios wins matches, but for now there is still a surreal feeling about how well this teenager plays at Grand Slams. He hit Seppi off the court on his own serve and took the few chances he managed to open up on Seppi's serve. Kyrgios is one win away from moving into the top 50 for the first time.

Lost Their Homework:

Benoit Paire (lost to Carreno-Busta 16 46 63 36)- Paire is an incredibly talented player who can be very temperamental at time. His poor temperament was on full display in this match, being pouty at times and complaining loudly at others. If only he could keep his wits about him, he could consistently be a top-30 player again.

Fernando Verdasco (lost to Kuznetsov 36 64 64 57 36)- This was an ugly, grinding match that featured a combined 27 more errors than winners. Verdasco just couldn't finish off the rallies as he should. He didn't go for enough, since in a pure power match he beats Kuznetsov. Verdasco should have been able to win this match. Instead, it's another disappointing result for the inconsistent Spaniard.

Tommy Robredo

Match of the Day:

When Tommy Robredo lost the first two sets to Simone Bolelli, we all knew that Robredo had Bolelli right where he wanted him. Somehow it feels like no player comes back from two sets down as much as Robredo. He did it in three consecutive matches at Roland Garros in 2013 and, at the end of this match, became just the seventh player to have done it at all four majors in his career.

The last three sets weren't even that exciting in their own right. Robredo took an early break in each of those sets and won them without too much drama. Still, coming back from two sets down is never easy and always noteworthy. The fact that Robredo pulled it off once again made this match quite exciting, even if it was a little anticlimactic in how it played out.
