Oct 20th 2013

Stockholm

In the biggest surprise of the day, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov rallied back from a set down to defeat world No. 4 David Ferrer and claim his maiden title at the If Stockholm Open, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Stating he was happy to win would be an understatement.

Competing in his first tournament under new coach Roger Rasheed, the 22-year-old will ascend to a career-high ranking of 22 with the title, kicking off the partnership on a great note.

“It's one of the biggest wins,” stated Dimitrov. “To beat a top guy in a final. It's a great feeling and it's good for your mental state. You know you can hang with these guys and the next time you play against them, especially in the Grand Slams, you will be better prepared.”

For Ferrer, though, his face says it all too.

Across the Baltic Sea, leave it to Tommy Haas to make his own history. For the first time in seven years, the 35-year-old has won more than one title on the season, defeating Robin Haase 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to capture the Erste Bank Open.

With the title, the German-American is still in contention for a coveted ATP World Tour Finals spot, though distant it may be. Strong runs in Valencia and Paris could help his claim.

Not to be forgotten, the Dutchman will return to the top 50 for the first time since April. Not a bad day at the office for either players.

Moscow

On double duty at the Kremlin Cup, top-seeded man Richard Gasquet defeated qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, as Simona Halep edged out Sam Stosur, 7-6(1), 6-2 to capture their respective crowns.

This marks Gasquet's third title on the season following Montpelier and Doha, and 10th title overall. Meanwhile, Halep wins the fifth title of her career, all of which have come in 2013. The other four came at Nürnberg, 's-Hertogenbosch, Budapest and New Haven.

Luxembourg

Despite all the squirling rumors regarding a possible split with boyfriend Rory McIlroy, Caroline Wozniacki hasn't let the news affect her. She sweeped the field on her way to defeating first-time finalist Annika Beck at the BGP BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open, 6-2, 6-2.

The Dane had no easy route to the final, having taken out Mandy Minella in the opening round, then routing tricky opponent Monica Niculescu before a three-set win over Bojana Jovanovski and finally a straight set win over slumping Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki in the semifinals.
