Serena Williams Stunned at Roland Garros

May 28th 2014

The upsets continued at Roland Garros on Wednesday. This time, it was one of the biggest in the history of the tournament. Top seed and defending champion Serena Williams not only lost, but faced total domination by Garbine Muguruza falling 6-2 6-2

The loss was the most lopsided in the stellar Grand Slam career of Williams. The younger Williams sister looked flat from the start, struggling with nearly every aspect of her game. The most dominant server the women’s game has known was broken in five of her eight service games. Her struggles continued with her groundstrokes,  where the powerful Williams gave away 29 unforced errors to only eight winners.

It is indeed shocking when referring to a Williams match as dominating, with that description applying to her opponent and not the American. But in this case, it was the young rising star Muguruza who was commanding, never wavering despite the fact that she had at no time won a set against a player in the top eight. Muguruza appeared in control throughout, never  letting the moment overwhelm her.

However, surprise results are not necessarily unusual for Williams, who has failed to advance beyond the fourth round in six majors since  returning from injury in 2010 while also reaching five Grand Slam finals during that same period.

Williams summed up her performance after the match, “It was one of those days. You can’t be on every day, and, gosh, I hate to be off during a Grand Slam,” she said. “It happens, you know. It’s not  the end of the world. It is what it is.”

Many had penciled in a Venus-Serena third-round matchup. However, neither Williams sister will be represented as Venus lost nearly an hour prior to her sister's match.

It was Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia rallying to defeat Venus 2-6 6-3 6-4. The American looked in control of the match, having taken the first set and  holding a break in the second, before the 19-year-old began her comeback.

Since Wimbledon of 2011, Venus has been eliminated in the first or second round of every Grand Slam except the 2013 Australian Open. However, she had entered Roland Garros on the heels of early 2014 success, which included a title in Dubai.

The Williams sisters have only lost on the same day of a Grand Slam just twice prior (2011 Wimbledon and 2008 French Open). With the losses, it will be world no. 35 Muguruza facing no. 56 Schmiedlova in the third round.
