Roland Garros WTA Day 6: Stosur Shines, Radwanska Falls

May 30th 2014

As each day passes, the matches at the French Open become more compelling. Here are some highlights from third-round WTA action at Roland Garros, featuring several top-10 women.

Samantha Stosur

19) Sam Stosur def. 9) Dominika Cibulkova

Stosur, the 2010 French Open finalist came out of the gate steady and never let off the gas, cruising past the Australian Open finalist 6-4 6-4.

History has not been kind to Cibulkova in this matchup. She fell to Stosur for the fifth straight time and never has won a set from her. On Friday, the Australian dictated play with a dominating serve and powerful forehand. Stosur fired 10 aces in the match, including an exclamation point on match point, sealing her best Grand Slam performance in two years. Always the fighter, Cibulkova exchanged some fiery points in the second set. But Stosur steadied her course, seemingly not affected and maintaining a steady flow. Despite her opponent’s aggression, Stosur finished the match with just 12 unforced errors.

“I'm very happy with my tennis,'' Stosur said. “I feel like today was definitely my toughest match, and I thought Domi played pretty well, so I'm very happy to get through this one in straight sets, and look forward to the next round.”

With Serena Williams no longer in the draw, a spot in the semifinals is a realistic goal for Stosur, who faces Maria Sharapova next. The winner of that match should be in the driver’s seat for at least a semifinal run.

Ajla Tomljanovic  def. 3) Agnieszka Radwanska

The top seeds continued to fall on Court Philippe Chatrier as the third-seeded Radwanska fell in straight sets to Tomljanovic 6-4 6-4. With the top two seeds eliminated early in Paris, the door opened for Radwanska to perhaps win her first Grand Slam. But an array of first-set errors placed her in a hole, and a quick second-set break by Tomljanovic created an even deeper one.

The native of Poland was never able to smooth out her game, continuing to place shots in the net and outside of the lines as she attempted to even the second set. Her best opportunity came in the eighth game, but she could not capitalize on three break opportunities.

The 21-year-old from Croatia reflected on her confidence coming into the match. “After seeing the two first seeds go out, you kind of feel like, ‘I can do this, too,’” Tomljanovic said. “I grew up with these girls that are beating them.”

Tomljanovic, who trained at the Chris Evert tennis academy in Florida, will face 14th seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who ended the Cinderella run by Taylor Townsend with a 6-2 6-2 win on Friday.

Maria Sharapova

7) Maria Sharapova def. Paula Ormaechea

If there was any question in regards to the focus of the seventh seed at Roland Garros, it was answered quickly on Friday as Sharapova delivered a double bagel at the expense of Ormaechea. Sharapova showed no mercy to the young Argentine as she administered a pounding, overpowering her throughout the match. In a match that lasted just 51 minutes, Sharapova finished off a 6-0 6-0 thrashing, advancing to face Sam Stosur in the next round.

Late in the contest, with the match so lopsided, the French crowd appeared uneasy to cheer loudly for Sharapova as game after game stacked up in her favor. Now, with Aga Radwanska falling on Friday, the label of favorite is now firmly attached to the Russian.

8) Angelique Kerber def. 31) Daniela Hantuchova

For eighth-seeded Kerber, it has been steady as she goes at Roland Garros. The German appears to be flying under the radar as chaos has swirled among other top seeds.

On Friday, she continued her pace with another straight-sets victory, this time against the veteran Hantuchova, 7-5 6-3. Kerber benefited from a difficult serving day by the Slovak, who won only 49 percent of her first serves and tossed in six double faults. Meanwhile, Kerber played a clean match, giving away just 10 unforced errors on the day.

The victory sets up an intriguing match against 18th-seeded Eugenie Bouchard in the fourth round. Bouchard came from behind to defeat Johanna Larsson of Sweden 7-5, 6-4.
