Rankings Watch: Two Veterans Spike this Week

Oct 13th 2016

Two former top-30 players are spiking in the WTA rankings this week. Peng Shuai and Bethanie Mattek-Sands have each climbed with success at tournaments during the week.

Peng has advanced to the semifinals at Tianjin following a walkover against Agnieszka Radwanska. Once ranked as high as world no. 14 in 2011, the 30-year old watched her ranking drop over the last couple of years but has picked up 39 positions this week on her home soil.  With her success this week, Peng has climbed to world no. 143 and will look to advance even further with continued success in Tianjin.

Many remember Peng in a performance in the 2014 US Open semifinals where extreme cramping led to her exit during a match against Caroline Wozniacki.

Meanwhile, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands has moved up 19 spots after advancing to the Hong Kong quarterfinals.

Mattek-Sands will face Kristina Mladenovic following her 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win against Caroline Garcia. The 31-year old is currently ranked world no. 180. She was ranked as high as world no. 30 in 2011.

The American has won 3 major doubles titles and 2 major mixed doubles championships.
