Radwanska, Halep Bounced in Roland Garros Rain

May 31st 2016

Once again, the big story from the French Open continued to be the rain on Tuesday. After completely washing out all matches on Monday, only two from the women’s draw were completed. Both of these produced upsets and a couple of favorites who were not happy with officials at Roland Garros.

Agnieszka Radwanska

In a match that began on Sunday, unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova defeated second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Radwanska appeared to be in firm control when play was suspended on Sunday, holding a one-set lead with a break of serve in the second set. But the Bulgarian rattled off 10 straight games and seized the momentum as the Pole could not stem the tide, appearing out of sorts.

Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Simona Halep suffered the same fate, falling to Sam Stosur of Australia, 7-6, 6-3. After a run in the first-set tiebreak, which Stosur took at 7-0, she picked up where she left off on Sunday, and Halep appeared to be in a rut on the court.

The conditions left both seeds angry and frustrated afterwards. “No one cares about the players in my opinion,” said Halep. “It was impossible to play. To play tennis matches during the rain is a bit too much. I don't care that I lost the match today, but I was close to getting injured with my back - that's a big problem.”

Radwanska echoed Halep’s sentiment, declaring, “I’m just so surprised and angry that we have to play in the rain. I mean, it’s not a $10,000  tournament. It’s a Grand Slam. How can you allow players to play in the rain? I cannot play in that. They really don’t care what we think.” She continued, “I had surgery a few years ago on my hand, and I couldn't really play in those conditions. End of story. Playing with those balls on that kind of court is pretty much impossible.”

Another day of rain sent tournament officials scrambling to reschedule the backlog of matches, which will resume on Wednesday, weather permitting.

Four matches from the men’s draw began on Tuesday but were interrupted. Among those included top-seed Novak Djokovic, who led Roberto Bautista-Agut 3-6, 6-4, 4-1 when play was called. Dominic Thiem and Marcel Granollers will resume play tied at a set apiece. Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer will pick up on serve early in the first set, and Ernests Gulbis will hold a 3-0 lead in the first set against David Goffin when play resumes. Twelve matches, including those suspended from Tuesday, are now scheduled on Wednesday.
