Ostapenko, Bacsinszky Advance To Roland Garros Semifinals

Jun 6th 2017

On a rainy day in Paris, the two women’s quarterfinal matches were played while the two scheduled in the men’s draw were pushed back until Wednesday. At the end of the day, Timea Bacsinszky and Jelena Ostapenko booked spots in the semifinals.

On Philippe-Chatrier Court, Bacsinszky eliminated Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-4. The French fan favorite had emerged as a strong contender for the title but it was the Swiss woman who controlled the match at the key points.

In a first set where the conditions were very windy, Bacsinszky broke serve twice only to see Mladenovic fight back to even play. But with Mladenovic serving at 4-4, Bacsinszky broke once more and consolidated it to close out the set.

Timea Bacsinszky

Mladenovic looked to have seized momentum in the second set as she broke to go up 3-1. But the 30th seed broke twice herself to gain an advantage and closed out the match after a rain delay.

Mladenovic finished the match with 34 unforced errors and struck just 16 winners. Bacsinszky capitalized on five of her 13 break point opportunities.

The Swiss described the conditions afterward, “It was really difficult because we had all the seasons rolled into one today. We had a sand storm, a hurricane and we almost had snow too,” said Bacsinszky. “It was really tough to keep my concentration all day long. I feel exhausted and I’m sure you do too. I’m really sorry to have knocked out the penultimate French player here.”

Bacsinszky will face 19-year-old Ostapenko who overcame a slow start to defeat Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Wozniacki jumped out to a fast start taking a 5-0 lead in the first set, only to see Ostapenko chip away at her deficit. The Latvian had a chance to even the set as she served at 4-5, but it was the veteran who stepped up and took advantage of errors to break and take the set.

Jelena Ostapenko

Ostapenko seized the momentum in the second set and raced out to an insurmountable lead, breaking Wozniacki’s serve three consecutive times. She continued her aggressive play in the third set breaking the Dane twice more and after a match that was interrupted by a three-hour rain delay, followed by another delay later, the teen advanced to the semifinals.

Ostapenko struck 38 winners in the match to Wozniacki’s 6.

Asked about her current state of play, “I mean, of course, when I came here, I didn't expect I'm going to be in the semis, but I was playing better and better every match,” she said. “So, I think if I keep it up, I think anything can happen.”

Bacsinszky and Ostapenko will square off on Thursday. The two players have never faced each other. “Lucky her, she's way younger than I am,” Bacsinszky said. “But maybe lucky me, experience-wise.”
