Nadal, Djokovic Through In Straight Sets At Roland Garros

May 29th 2017

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were fast out of the gate at Roland Garros as each swept through to the second round. Nadal defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 while Djokovic took care of Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

The Spaniard began his quest for a 10th French Open title as he entered Roland Garros as the favorite having compiled a 17-1 record on the red clay this spring.

It was a smooth ride for most of the day but Nadal did face a challenge in the second set as Paire gained a service break and jumped out to a 3-1 lead. With the home crowd now on his side, Paire looked to carry the momentum and seal the set. He set up a chance for a second break in the set but Nadal fought him off and squashed the momentum. The veteran quickly turned things around, seizing the set and saw very little resistance in the third set.

The most important thing is to win. If it’s in three, it’s better,” Nadal said.

Meanwhile, the 2nd-seeded Djokovic went to battle with Andre Agassi in his coaching box for the first time as he looks to defend his 2016 title in Paris.

Granollers battled hard against the world no. 2, breaking his serve four times in the match. He fought off 8 set points in the second before finally yielding the set to Djokovic.  Things went more smoothly for the Serb in the third set.

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic, who completed a career grand slam last season, is in search of his 13th major title. Asked about his new coach afterward, the 30-year old replied, “Andre has left already. He's waiting for me for a serious talk,” Djokovic joked. “It's great to have Andre Agassi as coach and as a mentor. I will try to learn as much as I can from him,” he added.

Next up for Djokovic is Joao Sousa of Portugal. Meanwhile, Nadal will face veteran Robin Haase in the second round.
