Murray, Williams Sisters Advance on "Manic Monday"

Jul 4th 2016

With the tournament back on schedule after play on middle Sunday, Manic Monday at Wimbledon went off as scheduled and despite some brief weather interruptions, 15 of the 16 matches were completed.

Murray Continues to Impress, Blows Past Kyrgios

2nd-seeded Andy Murray continued to play at a high level, defeating Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 on Centre Court.

The Brit rode the strength of his serve and clean, aggressive ground strokes to gain his big advantage. Kyrgios had no break point opportunities in a match where Murray struck 36 winners to just 6 unforced errors.

The Australian had moments where he appeared uninterested. There were times when it looked as though he had conceded the result and during one changeover in the third set, did not even bother to sit down.

Nonetheless, with the win, Murray advances to his ninth straight Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Murray rejected the notion of any pressure moving forward stating, “Every year I play here it's the same,” he said. “It's not any different this year than it's been any of the other years I've been here. I try my best to win my matches, go as deep as possible. I've been playing well so far in this event but the matches as you progress get tougher.”

He faces Jo-Wilfred Tsonga next. The Frenchman advanced after Richard Gasquet was forced to retire in the second set of their match.

Cibulkova Battles Past Radwanska

In one of the most competitive matches of the tournament, Dominika Cibulkova defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 5-7, 9-7.

In a contrast of styles, Cibulkova fired sharp, aggressive, high-intensity strikes, while Radwanska counterpunched. The result was a number of tremendously entertaining points.

In a dramatic third set, the Slovak overcame a match point and continued to pound her serve and ground strokes keeping the 3-seed on the defensive. Despite the assault, Radwanska stayed in the duel to the delight of the crowd. Both players traded service breaks as each refused to relinquish momentum, but it was the big forehand of the 19-seed that brought home the win.

The 27-year old is due to marry on Saturday, which happens to be the day of the women’s final. But she conceded that if she continued to advance, it would be a nice dilemma to have. “We planned this nine months ago,” Cibulkova said. “If I'm still here on Saturday that would be a dream coming true, so it will be good this way or the other.”

Halep Overcomes Keys

After dropping a tight first set tiebreak, Simona Halep rallied to defeat Madison Keys, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

After winning the first set, Keys appeared to carry the momentum into the second set, gaining a 2-0 lead. But the 5-seed would begin to find a comfort zone and would storm back to even the match.

And in the third set, Keys was ailing from a noticeable limp as she attempted to stay in the set. Clearly hampered and nearly brought to tears, Keys refused to call for a trainer and Halep continued to stride and eliminate the American.

Halep was happy with her performance. “I played well,” she said. “I mean, I felt every ball. Yeah, everything was good. And also the roof was good for me today.”

Williams Sisters Advance

Top-seeded Serena Williams overcame a frustrating start and motored past Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5. 6-0 on Centre Court. With the Russian serving for the first set at 5-4, it all began to click for the American, who broke serve and rattled off the next 9 games to roll into the quarterfinals.

In the first set, with Serena serving at 4-4, the 34-year old slipped on break point and Kuznetsova took advantage. But the fall appeared to wake up the world no. 1 who would quickly even the set at 5-5. Then, after a request by Williams, the Centre Court roof was closed due to rain and it was Serena who adjusted to the changing conditions quickly.

She was happy the decision was made to play inside. “It was really tricky out there because even though it wasn't raining hard…it was like a dewy…but it's on the grass, you can fall really easy, she said. “And then it wasn't about that, it was like 'Okay, shall I run for this shot or shouldn't I, because I don't necessarily want to fall?', then it became more of a difficulty because of that.”

Meanwhile, Venus Williams was tested early but quickly gained control for a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Carla Suarez Navarro.

Venus played from behind for most of the first set but finally gained a service break to even the set at 5-5. And momentum shifted in the tiebreak as she ran out to a 4-1 lead before closing it out at 7-3. Both players struggled to hold serve in the match but it was Venus who gained just enough of an advantage to control and close out the contest.

After a third-round match that was interrupted multiple times and once at match point, Williams thought it might be déjà vu as the rain began to fall mid-match. “I thought: Oh no not again,” she said. “It was hard… I was dismayed. I just tried to stay focused and she gave me a few points and that saw me through.”

Raonic Fights Back to Beat Goffin

Milos Raonic dug a two-set deficit but rallied to defeat David Goffin, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. It was the first time the Canadian won a five-setter after dropping the first two sets.

Early in the match, it was the Belgian who dictated play and found some success against the massive Raonic serve. But he was only able to get a look at one break opportunity in the final three sets and did not capitalize on it. Raonic would finish with 22 aces in the match.

Meanwhile, the 25-year old tilted the momentum in his favor and made enough inroads into his opponent’s serve to lock down the final three sets.

The 6th seed will advance to the quarterfinals where he will face Sam Querrey, who followed up his upset of Novak Djokovic with a straight set win against Nicolas Mahut.

Elsewhere

In the Men’s draw, Roger Federer eliminated American Steve Johnson in straight sets, while Marin Cilic moved through when Kei Nishikori was forced to retire due to injury. Meanwhile, Lucas Pouille defeated Bernard Tomic in a tough five-setter to advance to his first grand slam quarterfinal. Tomas Berdych and Jiri Vesely were unable to conclude, as the match was suspended due to darkness at two-sets apiece.

In the Women’s draw, Angelique Kerber continued to storm through the draw with a strong straight set win against Misaki Doi. Elena Vesnina, Yaroslava Shvedova, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova joined the German in the quarterfinals.
