Murray, Wawrinka Earn Wins At ATP World Tour Finals

Nov 16th 2016

Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka won their matches at the ATP World Tour Finals on Wednesday. But after the dust settled, no players from the John McEnroe Group clinched a semifinal berth.

In the first match, Murray overcame a deficit to defeat Kei Nishikori 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. It was a match in which Nishikori controlled for much of the day, but the world no. 1 found a way to win.

In the opening set, each player was forced to overcome a high number of unforced errors and with neither able to gain control, the set went to a tiebreak. There, Nishikori elevated his game to gain a 6-3 advantage but Murray fought off three set points and created two of his own. However, Nishikori battled back to win the final three points and the set as frustration surfaced from Murray.

The Brit quickly broke serve in the second set and even though the world no. 5 would earn the break back, Murray would close out the set after another successful game against Nishikori’s serve.

As the errors piled up from his opponent’s racket in the third set, Murray raced out to a 5-1 lead. The Japan native made a strong comeback but the deficit was too much for him to overcome and the native of Scotland closed out the match. Nishikori would finish with 49 unforced errors and despite a subpar serving day, Murray won his second match in London.

Murray addressed his performance afterward, “I didn't feel like I was hitting the ball as well as I would have liked,” he said. “He was dictating so many of the points. For me it was frustrating. Didn't matter whether I tried to hit the ball a bit harder, adjusted sort of my position on the court, nothing was sort of making me hit the ball cleaner. As the match went on, I was getting kind of frustrated, then becoming sarcastic with myself that I couldn't seem to hit the ball as clean as I wanted to. Yeah, I don't often do that, but today I was definitely being more sarcastic towards myself than usual.”

In the second match, Wawrinka eliminated Marin Cilic 7-6, 7-6 to earn his first win of the event.

It was an even first set as each player controlled service games throughout. And with neither gaining an advantage, a tiebreak would decide it.  Wawrinka was consistent in the tiebreaker and capitalized on some untimely errors by Cilic to win 7-3.

In the second set, Cilic quickly broke serve and appeared to have taken control, but the Swiss would even the set at 2-2 and play advanced to another tiebreak. Wawrinka broke open a close tiebreak, taking the last three points and the match.

“It was a great match,” said Wawrinka. “I'm really happy with the way I played in general. It was a tough match, for sure - two tie-breaks. I think the level was really high… I think I was moving great. It was a great victory for me.”

At the end of the day, Murray, Nishikori, and Wawrinka all still have a chance at the semifinals. The outcome will be determined after the McEnroe group resumes play on Friday.

Meanwhile, Milos Raonic will face Dominic Thiem in the Ivan Lendl Group on Thursday, with the winner joining Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. The Serb has clinched a spot and will face David Goffin who is substituting for the injured Monfils.
