Murray, Wawrinka Advance To Third Round In Paris

Jun 1st 2017

In the men’s draw, top-seeded Andy Murray and former Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka both advanced to the third round in Paris.

In a match that was an emotional roller-coaster, Murray overcame a gutsy effort by Martin Klizan to win, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.

The Slovakian pushed the world no.1 early with his massive forehand, gaining the upper hand.  Meanwhile, Murray sluggishly went through the opening set which took over an hour to decide. But the animated Scot pumped himself up and gained control of the second and third sets before Klizan found his ground again.

In the fourth set, Klizan began to play confidently again and signaled that he was not going down without a fight as he gained an advantage. But as he served to send the match to a deciding fifth set, Murray came up with a much-needed service break and controlled the tiebreak to take the set and match.

“I expected it to be very tough,” said Murray. “He goes for huge shots, and he hits forehand winners from any position on the court. As the match went on I managed to hit a bit deeper and dictate more of the points but when he is controlling with his forehand it’s very difficult. I certainly didn’t want the fifth set but at the end, there were some entertaining points.”

Murray will face Juan Martin Del Potro next. The Argentine advanced after Nicolas Almagro was forced to retire in the third set.

Elsewhere, third-seeded Wawrinka swept past Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 7-6, 7-5.

It was a high-caliber match Wawrinka was solid from the baseline, striking crisp, deep shots against the great shot maker. The Swiss struck 45 winners in the match.

“The most important thing for me is the way I play,” said Wawrinka.  “It was a difficult challenge because he is varying and mixing his shots well. It was a very, very good match.

Dolgopolov, who played well himself, only committed 18 unforced errors in the match but Wawrinka was too good on this day.

“He pushed me, he pressed me and I had to stay concentrated,” said Wawrinka. “It was a big game and the level was extremely high. I had to keep pushing back. I served well and that helped so I am satisfied.”

Wawrinka will face Fabio Fognini next. The Italian could be a challenge on the red dirt if he is engaged in the match.
