Murray Outlasts Raonic for Finals Berth

Jan 29th 2016

With the three earlier semifinal matches going the way of the favorite, Andy Murray and Milos Raonic met to complete the round. In a match filled with plenty of drama, the No. 2 seed advanced 4-6 7-5 6-7 6-4 6-2.

It was a match with plenty of twists and turns as momentum shifted back and forth between the players. In the first set, it was the Canadian who would waste no time in taking control with an opening break of service. With his big serve intact, it would be all Raonic would need to keep the set in his favor. Maintaining a high first-serve percentage, the 13th seed would not allow Murray inroads into his first strikes.

With both players protecting serve in the second set, it was the Brit who forced Raonic to serve to stay in the set at 5-6. While he had served consistently solidly up to this point, a double fault followed by a tremendous return of service by one of the best in the game would even the match with a timely break.

The pace picked up on service games in the third set. In fact, it was not until the sixth game that a returner scored a point against their opponent’s offering. And in a set in which Raonic lost only two points off his first serve, a tiebreak ensued. In the tiebreak, Raonic gained control by earning a 5-2 lead as his serve was on point. Murray fought back but fell short, and the set went to the Canadian.

A disappointing turn for Raonic occurred in the fourth set. Leading 2-1, he would leave the court for treatment by the trainer. And although it was not immediately noticeable, his movement appeared to be slightly hindered. As the set progressed, it was clear that the 25-year-old was working through an injury. Later in the set, he would summon the trainer once more as it was clear he was feeling the results from an upper leg injury. Raonic could not hold Murray back as his serve began to go awry.

A now hobbled and frustrated Raonic, with little left in the tank, attempted to remain competitive while playing with less movement in the fifth set. Perhaps knowing the inevitable result, he would smash a racket in frustration and receive a violation. Raonic would continue to battle, but Murray would race out to a 4-0 lead and close out the match.

Murray tried to stay focused despite his opponent’s condition. “He definitely slowed down in the fifth set for sure, which was unfortunate for him, I obviously got a bit lucky on that, but you just try to focus on your side of the court,” he said afterwards.

Meanwhile, a disappointed Raonic put the situation in perspective, saying “That's probably the most heartbroken I felt on court, but that's what it is.”

With the victory, Murray will face top-seeded Novak Djokovic for the title on Sunday. The Serb holds a 21-9 head-to-head advantage in the rivalry and has won 10 of their last 11 meetings.
