Kerber, Murray Advance To The Second Week

Jul 2nd 2016

Despite the buzz heard around the grounds as a result of the Novak Djokovic loss, there was plenty of action elsewhere at the All England Club.

Kerber Advances

Australian Open Champion Angelique Kerber continued to move through the draw with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Carina Witthoeft. Kerber has yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Her steady play forced her fellow countrywoman into a whopping 44 unforced errors and she broke Witthoeft 5 times in 12 chances. She heads into the second week with a lot of confidence.

I think right now I'm feeling really good, like in Australia,” said Kerber. “Of course, I have confidence. I know how to win a tournament like this. At the end, I think it was a good week for me. I had a good three matches. But right now, the second week starts.”

The four-seed will face Misaki Doi next.

Murray Strides into Second Week

A player who certainly benefited from the Djokovic loss is second-seeded Andy Murray. The Brit continued his consistent play with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 win against John Millman on Centre Court.

After taking the first set with ease, Murray received the Aussie’s best shot in the second. As he served for the set at 5-4, Millman would break to even it. But it was short-lived as the 2013 Wimbledon Champion followed with another service break and closed out the set. He would breeze through the third set in just 30 minutes.

With rain interrupting play again, there was a delay in order to close the Centre Court roof during the match. Murray addressed his adjustments after the contest, “When you go indoors it slows the conditions down a bit so it wasn’t easy to hit too many winners. I had to be patient and played some good stuff in the third set.”

With the exit of Djokovic, Murray has become the favorite to take the title. He has benefitted from playing all of his matches on Centre Court allowing him to miss significant weather delays during the first week.

Halep Rolls On

Simona Halep continued her impressive week at SW19, defeating French Open semifinalist Kiki Bertens, 6-4, 6-3.

The five-seed has flown under the radar in a week where she has given up no more than 4 games in a set. The Romanian has excelled despite a nagging Achilles injury. She bypassed pre-Wimbledon grass court events in an attempt to allow her tendon to heal.

“I'm fit now but some days I have pain again. I don't know what is going on with my Achilles,” she said.

Nevertheless, Halep advanced in just an hour and nine minutes behind her crisp, counter-punching game.

Raonic Outduels Sock

In a battle of two big servers, it was 6th-seeded Milos Raonic eliminating Jack Sock, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Raonic won the battle of the serves with 27 aces to Sock’s 9 as the American struggled with his first offering for much of the match. The Canadian ripped 60 winners to just 12 unforced errors as his first-strike game proved to be effective.

It was a match that featured just one service break which would belong to Raonic. He was happy to advance to the second week. “I'm happy with the way I was able to get it done in three sets and move on and give myself another challenge looking forward,” he said.

It will be a contrast in styles in the next round as Raonic faces 11th-seed David Goffin, a fluid, solid shot-maker whose quickness often forces opponents to play extra balls.

Other seeds to advance in the men’s draw include 5th-seeded Kei Nishikori, 9th seed Marin Cilic and 19 seed Bernard Tomic. Meanwhile, 9th seeded Madison Keys, 19 seed Dominika Cibulkova and 28th seed Lucie Safarova all advanced in the women's draw on Saturday.
