FollowIvanovic, Svitolina Set Up Roland Garros Quarterfinal
As the door swings open to the second week at Roland Garros, two women secured their places in the quarterfinals on Sunday. With more spots in the final eight awaiting play on Monday, a former French Open champion and a player looking to better her quarterfinal run from last year advanced in the women’s draw.
Ivanovic advances past Makarova
Seventh-seeded Ana Ivanovic beat the rain and ninth seed Ekaterina Makarova 7-5 3-6 6-1 at Roland Garros on Sunday. The 2008 champion opened up a tight match in the third set to reach her eighth career Grand Slam quarterfinal. On a day where rain pushed back the play of competitors such as Maria Sharapova to Monday, Ivanovic accomplished her result despite a long delay due to the conditions.
It is the Serb’s first return to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros since her 2008 title. She was pleasantly surprised with her progress as she reflected after the match. “It's amazing to be in the quarterfinals again. To be honest, coming into the tournament I didn't really expect that at all,” she said. “But I really worked hard for each match. I worked hard even before the tournament to reach the quarterfinal again.”
The 27-year-old overcame a day in which she did not serve at her best but was able to break Makarova five times during the match. After Ivanovic had taken the first set, the Russian was able to rally back to even the match, finding success against Ivanovic’s second serve. She broke serve twice and had seized momentum going into the final set. But in the third, the Serb regained it, improving her service games while attacking Makarova on hers and cruised to the set, taking the match.
It was an impressive performance by the veteran Ivanovic, eliminating a dangerous player who previously advanced to the semifinals at the Australian Open earlier in the year. She will face Elina Svitolina next.
Svitolina eliminates Cornet
In what turned out to be a controversial match, Elina Svitolina defeated Alize Cornet 6-2 7-6 on Sunday. The 20-year-old won a hard-fought match against the home favorite Cornet that included a line call that infuriated the Frenchwoman. Serving on a break point at 5-5 in the second set, Cornet struck a deep ground stroke which was called out, but Cornet insisted the shot was in. After the call was ruled in Svitolina’s favor, Cornet blasted the chair umpire, “The ball is touching the back line and you know it. You’re looking in my eyes and you know it.”
Cornet would break back to send the set into a second-set tiebreak, but after an intense battle where the Frenchwoman would fight off five match points, she fell 11-9 and lost in straight sets.
However, after the match Cornet joined Victoria Azarenka in calling for a review of line call regulations at Roland Garros. With the call still on her mind, the fiery Cornet stated, “It's a scandal. It's shameful. I don't know how she could look me straight in the eye and tell me the ball was out.” Azarenka was equally upset at a call during her match on Saturday against Serena Williams.
Nonetheless, Svitolina remained cool and calm during the match, showing poise beyond her 20 years. She is the youngest player remaining in the women’s draw.
With the interruption of rain, second seed Maria Sharapova faces the prospect of playing on back-to-back days. But with a backlog of men’s matches, her match against Lucie Safarova, along with Garbine Muguruza versus Flavia Pennetta, was pushed back to Monday.
