Indian Wells: WTA Quarterfinals Preview

Mar 14th 2018

The women’s quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells are set, and you can look forward to some world-class tennis. Fighting to get out of the top quarter, Simona Halep faces Petra Martic. Martic reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alona Ostapenko. Halep has not faced the Croation since juniors but has a clear picture of what to expect as she prepares: “She's serving strong and the kick is going to be tough. Also, she has a big forehand. She's coming to the net. So, I know a little bit how she's playing, but I will focus on myself like always.”

Karolina Pliskova

In the second quarter, Naomi Osaka will face Karolina Pliskova. The latter beat American Amanda Anisimova 6-1, 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals and said of the Japanese player: “I think she has a big game, for sure, big forehand, big serve. It would be tough to play her. But for sure she won pretty good matches here, playing good players, so she would be confident as well.” Pliskova did win their last encounter, but Osaka is quick to remind that it took three sets: “going into it, I don't want to think too much on that, because that's in the past, and I don't want to psych myself out on what could or couldn't happen. But I think that if I was hurt and I was able to do well against her, then if I focus and really concentrate and just do the best that I can right now, it should be a good match.”

In the third quarter, Venus Williams faces Carla Suarez Navarro. Venus is confident in her match up with Navarro, having had just beaten Anastasija Sevastova: “I think the big difference is I played her more than the girl today. I really didn't know her game. So today was, like, also a learning – what works? What doesn't work? How does this player – what's the rhythm like? I don't think there will be as many surprises if I play her.”

Venus Williams

In the final quarter, Angelique Kerber will play Daria Kasatkina. Kerber beat Caroline Garcia with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory. The self-defeating Kerber who played a shaky first set against Makarova before the rains gave her a reprieve is long gone, and 2016 Kerber with a twist is in her stead. Following the match, Kerber showed herself relieved, describing Australia as a turning point that marks her new success.

Tuesday and Wednesday the men wrap up their round of 16. The first set of results include Feliciano Lopez taking Jack Sock out of the competition with a narrow 7-6, 6-4, 4-6 victory that had the well-filled stadium cheering on their feet. Juan Martin Del Potro beat David Ferrer 6-4, 7-6.
