Halep, Ostapenko To Meet In Roland Garros Final

Jun 9th 2017

Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko will face off in the women’s final at Roland Garros after each won their semifinal match.

The first semifinal featured two women celebrating birthdays and it was unseeded Jelena Ostapenko who had the happier one with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win against Timea Bacsinszky. She will advance to her first major final.

In the first set, both players struck big, aggressive groundstrokes as each went for their shots. But both struggled with their serve as the set featured six service breaks and would be decided by a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Ostapenko consistently ripped high velocity, angled groundstrokes that placed the Swiss on the defensive and after more than an hour, she took the first set.

Midway through the set, Bacsinszky called for the trainer, who wrapped an area above her right knee. However, it did not appear to hamper her afterward.

Ostapenko controlled play early in the second set as she fired winners near the lines. But Bacsinszky played strong enough defense and benefitted from some errors from the young Latvian to gain a key break and took a 4-3 lead. Bacsinszky consolidated the break and nailed the set down with another service break. And in a set in which Ostapenko dictated play and Bacsinszky seemingly defended throughout, the veteran evened the match.

But in the third set, the constant attack from the 20-year-old finally took its toll as Ostapenko continued to control the points.  And with the set tied at 3-3, she won the final three games to close out the match.

Ostapenko reflected on her run at Roland Garros, “When I came here, of course I didn't expect I would be in the final. But then, like, first match was a tough match and I won it and it kind of gave me confidence. Then every match I was playing better and better and I got my confidence, and I think it works pretty well.”

In the second semifinal, Simona Halep advanced past Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Halep came out poised and in control in the first set as she was quick to turn defense into offense against the big-hitting Czech who struggled with consistency. She misfired with 24 unforced errors.

In the second set, Pliskova found better success imposing her will against the Romanian and captured the momentum. However, Halep showed the change in her mental approach once again as she dialed back in during the third set and wore down Pliskova.

Afterward, Halep continued to credit coach Darren Cahill for her change in mental toughness. “I learned that I have to be focused in the match day,” she said. “It comes natural now. I can handle everything.”

Saturday’s final will be the first meeting between Halep and Ostapenko.
