French Open: Zverev, Djokovic Advance To Fourth Round

Jun 1st 2018

For the second straight match, second-seeded Alexander Zverev was pushed to five sets, but he survived a scare from Damir Dzumhur in a third-round match in Paris. The German advanced after a 6-2 3-6 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 win.

Once again, Zverev found himself forced to come from behind and had to save a match point to defeat the world number 29. Nevertheless, he moved into the fourth round for the first time in his career at Roland Garros.

Zverev found his back against the wall in the fourth set as Dzumhur served for the match leading 6-5. There, the 21-year-old rose to the occasion breaking at love and then he rode the momentum into the tiebreak, where he would win and take the match to a fifth set.

After trailing for much of the match, Zverev appeared to find his confidence in the fifth set. But Dzumhur did not make it easy as he continued to push the higher seed and after trailing 2-4, won the next 3 games.  But Zverev kept his poise and broke serve at a key moment and closed out the match on his racket.

“It was an amazing, high-level match,” said Zverev. “He served for the match and I had to save lots of break points in the fourth and fifth sets. Sometimes you have to battle to get the win and that's what I did today.”

Zverev has face criticism for never reaching a quarterfinal in a grand slam, but for the second match in a row, he could have easily folded, but instead, fought through adversity to advance. He will now have a chance to reach his first major quarterfinal with a win in his next match.

Meanwhile, former world number one Novak Djokovic continued to search for his game as he defeated No. 13 seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-2.

At times, glimpses of the play that led Djokovic to 12 major titles were there but at other times he was plagued by inconsistent play that has haunted him in recent months.

He began the match successfully, striking winners, serving well and looking confident. But he wavered in the second set and let one get away that could have easily gone his way. In the second set tiebreak, after missing a routine forehand, the Serb’s frustrations red-lined, and he smashed his racket on the red clay. Bautista Agut evened the match.

Then, in the third set, Djokovic lost his serve twice but fought back to even the set midway. However, the Spaniard’s play rose, and he regained control of the set to move to 5-3. But Djokovic avoided trouble by elevating his game and pushed the set to a tiebreak. He would take the pivotal set and then closed out the match with a fairly routine fourth set.

“It was a great fight, almost four hours,” Djokovic said. “Bautista Agut, he's not going to hand you the win. You have to deserve it. You know, for me, not having so many matches in the last period, this is great. I mean, of course I don't want to play four, five hours every match, but I think it was a great test. I had to earn my victory.”

The 2016 French Open champion will face Fernando Verdasco, who upset Grigor Dimitrov, next.
