French Open 2018: Best and Worst Dressed at Roland Garros

Jun 4th 2018

Serena Williams’ catsuit and Nike’s Neo Turquoise ladies ruled the fashion scene at the 2018 French Open.

With Williams and Maria Sharapova playing in the same Grand Slam for the first time in two years, tennis showcased its two biggest fashion icons.

Maria Sharapova

Sharapova wore a NikeCourt Maria dress with mesh accents. Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens, Daria Kasatkina and Madison Keys all wore variations of the NikeCourt French Open kit.

Sloane Stephens

Stephens paired black shorts with a turquoise tank, while Halep opted for a pleated skirt.

Williams stood out above all others in a full-body black catsuit with a hot pink accent around the middle. Some noted that the head-to-toe onesie made Serena look like a superhero from the mythical city of Wakanda in the movie Black Panther.

Although Nike reportedly designed the outfit long before the movie, Williams liked the idea of the superhero connotation.

It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically, with their body to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves,” Williams said during a post-match interview after a first-round win over Krystina Pliskova.

Heading into Roland Garros, Novak Djokovic appeared to have lost some of his super powers. If the clothes make the man, then no wonder Djokovic is back on track. His Lacoste kit was tops among the best-dressed men.

Last year, Djokovic became a brand ambassador for Lacoste after representing Uniqlo for five years. The switch meant moving away from what was a solid, but predictable look to a more tailored and sophisticated style with Lacoste.

The Novak Collection features a tennis polo with an orange band with a formal touch of trim around and flanking the collar.

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev looked super cool in his layered kit from Adidas. Zverev’s outfit includes beige chevron shorts and a coral tee coordinated with his signature headband.

Other Adidas standouts included Naomi Osaka and Jelena Ostapenko, who wore cute coral tops with pleated front and indigo trim.

Of course, Bethanie Mattek-Sands garners an obligatory mention among the worst dressed. The black tank paired with a neon-orange fringed skirt represents her signature hot messiness.

Fabio Fognini’s Shazam shirt with a thick lightning bolt down the front was among the worst looks for men.
