Forever Young: Highlights of ATP Thursday Action

Jan 16th 2014

The heat once again dominated play, this time finally pausing it. It took them two days too long, but the tournament finally realized that they could not ask players to play in such unsafe conditions. Play was delayed on every outdoor court for several hours until it cooled down enough for the athletes to compete safely.

Note: Due to the lack of play, this day’s recap will be constructed differently than other days’. Any matches that could not be mentioned in this article will be considered for tomorrow’s recap.

Roger Federer

It cannot be overstated how impressive Roger Federer was today. Federer’s struggles over the last year have kept him a bit off the radar at this tournament. But ignoring him completely is always a bad idea, which he reminded us of today. Blaz Kavcic played a solid match, but Federer obliterated him, especially in the first two sets.

Federer’s consistency has fallen off because he plays shaky matches more often than he once did. That happens; he can’t stave off getting older forever. He is no longer the top favorite to win Slams, but sometimes we need days like today to remind us that he can still play vintage Federer tennis—the kind of tennis that has won him 17 Slams.

His main rival, on the other hand, did not have such an easy day at the office. The straight-set scoreline belies it, but Rafael Nadal was made to work today against 19-year-old Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kokkinakis played strong tennis and worked himself into break points on several Nadal service games. Nadal was not playing at his highest level and could have been in trouble had his opponent been someone more developed and experienced than Kokkinakis.

One other potential contender in this tournament completed his match before the heat delay. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga got through Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets, although it was also in less-than-impressive fashion. Tsonga had trouble closing out games and sets and did not look like someone who could challenge the top seeds. He has a few more matches to work that out, but the level he played at today was not enough.

By far the most entertaining match of the day, even if it wasn’t the highest quality, was Donald Young against Andreas Seppi. The pair played four even, grinding sets of tennis in the early heat. The grinding style might have been difficult to watch for some people, but it was two talented athletes working their ways through points, and they did produce highlight-reel shots on occasion. After Young was broken to end the fourth set and level the match at two sets apiece, play was halted for heat.

Donald Young

After a break of over four hours, the pair returned to court in a winner-take-all fifth set. Points were tightly contested, but everything went the way of the server until the tenth game. After that, everything went wacky. While serving at 4-4, Seppi hit three consecutive double faults to break himself. Young responded by hitting four straight errors to break himself at love.

Then, though, both players calmed down and produced some great tennis in the final two games. Young got a second break by winning one of the most incredible defensive points you will ever see. He was less nervous on his following attempt to serve the match out, including painting a line on a brilliant forehand winner at 30-30.

This marked an impressive win for Young, who is finally—and quietly—moving his career back in the right direction.
