Federer, Murray Advance to Semifinals After Dramatic Wins

Jul 6th 2016

The Men took center stage at the All England Club on Wednesday with all four quarterfinal matches in action. And the fans received more than their monies worth with dramatic, high-quality tennis.

Federer Advances after Epic Comeback

In a match for the ages, Roger Federer overcame a two-set deficit and three match points to advance past Marin Cilic 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

It was a rematch of the 2014 U. S. Open semifinal, where Cilic upset Federer in straight sets on his way to the title at Flushing Meadows. And on Wednesday, the Croat jumped out in similar fashion taking the first two sets.

Early in the match, Cilic dominated behind his big serve as he refused to allow the Swiss any chance to gain momentum. “I wasn’t seeing his serves anymore,” Federer said. “He had one chance, he took it, next thing you know you’re down two sets on grass. He was reading my serve; I couldn’t read his serve. It wasn’t going well. I had to hang in there, somehow hope for his level to drop a little bit and that’s exactly what happened.”

But the comeback nearly did not happen. With Federer serving at 3-3 in the third set, the 7-time Wimbledon champion dug a 0-40 hole but managed to fight off the break opportunities and hold serve. It was a turning point as Federer immediately benefitted from a blip in the Cilic serve and gained a break. He would serve out the set.

With the crowd in a frenzy, Federer staved off three match points at various points in the fourth set as play advanced to a tiebreak. There, the 34-year old relied on his serve at key moments, including a match point before finally taking it 11-9.

The three-seed finally seized the advantage for good in the fifth set. After failing to capitalize on a break point midway through, he would break serve to go to 5-3 and served out the match with his 27th ace. It completed one of the biggest comebacks of his legendary career.

I was in so much trouble in the third and again in the fourth,” said Federer. “I feel sorry for Marin but for me, the dream continues. I couldn’t be happier, I thought I fought well and played super-great at the end. He continued, “I think the last three sets were really good and it’s really encouraging to see I am improving as the match goes on. My legs were there, my back was there, serving was key and mentally this is going to give me a hell of a boost. I’m really, really pleased and just ecstatic to be in the next round.”

With the victory, Federer will advance to the semifinals for the 11th time in his career.

Murray Holds Off Tsonga Comeback to Advance

Andy Murray overcame a fierce comeback but held on to defeat Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-1 on Centre Court.

In the first set, both players engaged in competitive tennis which led to some compelling points and a tight tiebreak that turned into a tug-of-war. But after fending off 3 set-points, Murray finally won at 12-10 on his fourth set-point opportunity.

The Brit would build on the momentum early in the second, earning a quick break of service and continued to take advantage of what appeared to be heavy legs by the Frenchman. But in the third set, if there was any question as to the state of his endurance, Tsonga would answer as he found his second wind. His intensity level rose behind his serve and forehand as he broke the 2-seed to go to 3-1. With Tsonga serving at 5-3, Murray had an opportunity to get back on serve with a break opportunity, but the 31-year old would not be denied.

In the fourth set, Tsonga settled into a nice groove while some frustration began to surface from Murray. But as the world no. 2 continued to self-motivate, he took advantage of a poor service game by Tsonga and gained a key break at love to take a 4-2 advantage. However, it was short-lived as the native of France returned the favor with a service break of his own in the following game. As the intensity elevated, both players engaged in a duel of tremendous shot making. But it was Tsonga who would strike with a variety of high-quality passing shots to gain another break and equal the set on his racket.

However, in the decisive fifth set, Murray quickly gained a service break to take an early edge. And as he outwardly displayed his determination, he would gain a second break of service. This would create a deficit too large for Tsonga to overcome and Murray advanced to the semifinals.

Murray credited his opponent afterward stating, “Tsonga's a pretty good player,” Murray said with a laugh. “He's one of the greatest grass-court players in the world. He came up with some great shots. Credit to him for fighting his way back into the match.”

Murray had one thing on his mind after the match. “Time to rest and go get ready for the next one,” he said. He will face Berdych in the semifinals.

Raonic Ends Querrey’s Dream Tournament

Milos Raonic continued his strong play at SW19 with a 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win over Sam Querrey, to advance to the semifinals. The win ends a run by the American which included the upset of world no. 1 Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament.

In the first two sets, Querrey could not make inroads into the Canadian’s serve and did not have the same level of success with his groundstrokes as in previous matches.

However, he would break through in the third set to extend the match but could not completely gain the momentum as Raonic took control in the fourth. Behind the influence of coach John McEnroe, the 6-seed won 35 of 47 chances at the net.

He was happy to have turned the match back in his favor and advance. “There were some momentum shifts there. I’m glad I was able to get back on the right path after he won the third,” Raonic said. “I was able to get things back on my terms. It’s a well-deserved chance to be in the semi-finals. It’s exciting, but also humbling because you have to get the win.”

With the win, Raonic will face Federer in the semifinals on Friday. The Swiss champion holds a 9-2 head-to-head record but the 25-year old won their last meeting in Brisbane early in the year.

Berdych Rolls Past Pouille

Elsewhere, Tomas Berdych rolled into the semifinals with a 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Lucas Pouille.

For much of the tournament, Berdych has been on the wrong side of the weather, forced to play during sessions that typically would have been days off. He was the only quarterfinalist whose match was forced to conclude on Tuesday. But that did not appear to hamper the Czech on Wednesday as he made quick work of the upstart Frenchman.

After taking a tight first set tiebreak, Berdych cruised in the second and third sets. Despite playing quality tennis over the fortnight, the 10-seed has flown under the radar for most of the tournament.

Despite the score, the Czech felt challenged in the match. “On paper, it looks pretty easy, but really I had to work hard for that,” Berdych said. “I had to find my rhythm and when I did in the first set tie-break I felt much better. After that, it was more straightforward.”

He is now just one win away from equaling his 2010 result in London. “It's a great feeling. I hoped one day I would have the chance to use the experience from my Wimbledon final and I'm going to go for it again,” Berdych said.
