On The Rise: Clara Tauson

Aug 22nd 2021

Clara Tauson, of Denmark, has seen her stock rise in 2021. She ended the 2020 season ranked world number 152.  After winning the WTA Chicago 125 event this weekend, she now finds herself ranked world number 76, moving up 25 sports.

Tauson defeated Emma Raducanu 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 on Sunday.

The 18-year-old has solid wins this season against recent Montreal Champion Camila Giorgi, world number 34 Ekaterina Alexandrova, Ajla Tomljanovic, and Ann Li. She competed in the French Open where she won her first round before falling to Victoria Azarenka in the second. At Wimbledon, she fell in the opening round to world number 9 Barbora Krejcikova.

However, the Copenhagen native has won 4 tournaments in 2021 (two ITF, one WTA250, and this week’s WTA125 event).

Tauson found success early, winning the 2019 Junior title at the Australian Open and soaring to the top of the junior world rankings.

At 60”, she is an aggressive ball striker and covers the court well for her height, with her forehand considered her biggest weapon.

The teen is the highest-ranked player from Denmark and the first to find the spotlight since Caroline Wozniacki, who retired in 2020.

With the success she has achieved so far this season, the future looks bright for the Dane.
