While much of the tennis world is focused on the Olympic games in Rio, there is news from not only from the host nation but elsewhere.
Tomas Berdych added Goran Ivanisevic to his team as coach beginning at the Cincinnati Masters next week. Ivanisevic most recently teamed with Marin Cilic, producing positive results. Most notably, the Croat was on board when Cilic won the 2014 U. S. Open. The two parted ways in July and in an interview with the publication ‘Novosti’, it appeared that all was not well between the two. “I decided to split with Ivanisevic. No comment on my relationship with him,” said Cilic. “'I do not want to enter into details. My path continues, it's a pity we parted ways, but that's it. I wish to get good results in the future as well and that my career goes in the right direction.”
Berdych announced the news on twitter.
It was a difficult 24 hours for the world no. 1 Novak Djokovic in Rio. He was upset by Juan Martin Del Potro in the opening round of singles play. And on Monday, he and Nenad Zimonjic were eliminated in doubles. Djokovic could not leave Rio fast enough as he announced his withdrawal from mixed doubles and also stated that he would bypass Cincinnati to focus on the next Grand Slam in Flushing Meadows.
It has also been a difficult Olympics for American Venus Williams, who lost in the first round to Kirsten Flipkens in singles and later with sister Serena in doubles. However, she is hoping to change her luck in mixed doubles where she will pair with Rajeev Ram. Williams had not originally planned to enter the event but after the early round losses, changed her mind. The mixed doubles tournament will feature the power team of Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza along with the top two seeds, Caroline Garcia-Nicolas Mahut and Kristina Mladenovic-Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
For the music/tennis aficionados, Phil Collins will be headlining the U. S. Open opening ceremonies later this month. He will be performing his single, “In the Air Tonight,” at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The world no. 1 women’s doubles team of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza have decided to go their separate ways. Each will pair up with a new partner but will compete in the WTA year-end championship together. The team has already qualified for that event.
Elsewhere, 17-time major singles champion Roger Federer, turned 35 on Monday. Earlier in the summer, the Swiss announced that he would not play again in 2016 in an effort to return at full strength in 2017. One sponsor certainly has made it clear who their G. O. A. T. is.
On the injury front, veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber announced his withdrawal from the Olympic games due to a stress fracture in his right foot. The injury will likely keep him out of the U. S. Open as well. He joins Dustin Brown as Germans forced to withdraw from the Rio games because of injury. Brown was leading in his first-round match with Thomaz Bellucci when a severe ankle injury forced him out of competition.
Meanwhile, it was announced that Benoit Paire was banished from the Olympics immediately following his loss to Fabio Fognini on Tuesday. The decision came from Team France and was announced by Arnaud Di Pasquale, French Tennis Federation Chief. Di Pasquale stated, “We are forced to take this decision after a series of discussions and violations on the rules of the group life that we gave ourselves. It's unacceptable, it's a lack of respect towards his teammates and staff. If you're in a team, you've to respect rules,” he continued. “In Rio, we never saw him. I asked him to pack, to go to do what he wants outside from here. We can't accept it; he was warned more than one time. His presence is not needed if he's unable to respect rules.”
