Sam Querrey Meets Dave Joerger in Memphis

Sam Querrey had a busy afternoon on Monday at the US National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis.

After completing a 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 first-round doubles victory with countryman Ryan Harrison over Benjamin Becker and Yen-Hsun Lu, the No. 2 American and 2010 champion came back one hour later to take on Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger in an entertaining Match Tie-break.  Querrey prevailed 10-5 against the first-year NBA head coach in front of a large crowd of local media and fans who gathered on Court 1.

It was fun to play someone in another professional sport and he was super cool, nice guy and just a fun experience,” said Querrey, who is an avid NBA fan. “He had a little old-school game with the chip and charge, and for a guy who is dedicated 100 percent to basketball and doesn’t get to play tennis often, he played pretty well.”

Joerger (YAY-gur), who won the Minnesota Class A state championship in high school in 1992, is an avid player, and tennis remains one of his favorite sports outside of basketball. Growing up in a small town in Minnesota, Dave was the son of two school teachers.  His father was the girls basketball coach as well as the tennis coach at the town’s high school.

Sam was very nice to me and I appreciate that,” said Joerger, whose team had the day off in the middle of playing four games in five nights.

After the Match Tie-Break with Querrey, Joerger, his wife and two daughters took in some of the first-round action on Stadium Court in the Fed-Ex suite.  No. 2 seed and last year’s Memphis finalist Feliciano Lopez stopped by to say hello and told the coach he is looking forward to watching Tuesday’s game against the Washington Wizards.  Lopez is a friend of Grizzlies center Marc Gasol, who is a Barcelona native.

I enjoy watching the NBA and anytime I have a chance to see a game in person, I try to go, especially to watch players from Spain,” said Lopez, who is also a friend of Gasol’s brother, Pau, of the Los Angeles Lakers.
