Finally, It's Zverev!

Alexander Zverev had been close before.

He had reached Grand Slam finals. He had won some of the biggest tournaments in the sport. Yet one accomplishment remained missing from his résumé.

On Sunday, the German finally checked that box.

Zverev defeated Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in the French Open final to capture the first Grand Slam title of his career.

As Cobolli's final shot landed long, Zverev fell to the clay. The moment had been years in the making.

The victory comes after several painful losses on tennis' biggest stages. Zverev finished runner-up at the U. S. Open in 2020, the French Open in 2024 and the Australian Open earlier this season. Each defeat brought questions about whether he would ever get over the finish line at a major.

This time, he did.

The match appeared to be headed toward a straightforward afternoon early on.

Zverev dominated the opening set, breaking Cobolli twice and winning it 6-1 in just over 30 minutes. The German controlled the baseline exchanges and consistently put pressure on the Italian's serve.

But Cobolli, appearing in his first Grand Slam final, settled down as the match progressed.

The Italian began taking bigger cuts at the ball in the second set and found success attacking Zverev's second serve. After earning a late break, Cobolli leveled the match and suddenly looked comfortable on one of the sport's biggest stages.

The third set featured some of the highest-quality tennis of the afternoon.

Both players held firm through much of the set before Zverev earned the breakthrough he needed. The German's experience showed during several lengthy rallies as he moved ahead by two sets to one.

Still, the match was far from over.

Cobolli continued to play freely and pushed the fourth set to a tiebreak. With the crowd firmly engaged, the Italian delivered some of his best tennis of the tournament to force a deciding fifth set.

For Zverev, it was another test.

The memories of previous Grand Slam disappointments could have easily resurfaced.

Instead, he produced one final response.

Zverev immediately grabbed control of the fifth set and never allowed Cobolli an opening. He broke serve early, extended the lead and maintained the aggressive approach that carried him through much of the tournament.

When the championship was finally secured, the emotion was evident.

For Cobolli, the loss caps what was still the best major result of his career. The Italian arrived in Paris as one of the sport's rising players and leaves having proven he can compete on the biggest stage.

For Zverev, the significance is much larger.

For years, he was viewed as one of the best players of his generation without a Grand Slam title. The talent was never questioned. The results at the majors often were.

Those questions no longer exist.

After years of coming close, Alexander Zverev is finally a Grand Slam champion.
