Australian Open Fashion Underwhelms Down Under
The 2020 Australian Open featured more shocking upsets than daring outfits. Most players and sports apparel makers played it safe, opting for the traditional over edgy. Although, a few kits turned heads, for the most part, the fashion down under underwhelmed.
The biggest names in men's tennis, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, wore their usual uniforms. Federer came out in his traditional polo, Nadal bared arms and Djokovic kept it coordinated.
Serena Williams, forever the fashionista, wore a customized dress that evoked old Hollywood glam with a girlie girl twist. However, the dress received mixed reviews on social media. One person compared the kit to Pebbles Flintstone's dress. The spotted purple dress was a departure from Williams' sportier looks, including recent revisits to the bodysuit.
The NikeCourt men's warmup created buzz when Grigor Dimitrov took to the court in some galactic boogaloo getup.
Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka dazzled in her Nike Court outfit. Part of Nike's Melbourne collection, Osaka's kit checked all the right fashion boxes. It was dainty, pretty, fabulous, feminine and sporty.
Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Elena Svitolina and Sloane Stephens wore versions of the design. However, Osaka's ensemble was among the best at the Aussie Open.
Nike designs featured prints created in collaboration with Melbourne-based artist Cassie Byrnes. The ladies looked darling, the men who wore the colorful shorts looked dashing, except for warmups.
Although Maria Sharapova didn't stick around long, her dress looked glamorous. The A-line style with racer back is a look synonymous with Sharapova.
Djokovic looked like a mean green machine in his Lacoste Sport x outfit, which featured an oversized crocodile print on the polo. Even his Asics sneakers looked color coordinated to match. The white top version with its green line detailing was equally attractive. The bold green stood out in a sea of Nike and Adidas pastel corals, blues, purples and pinks.
The Adidas ladies looked lovely in simple, but elegant Heat.RDY collection with Y-back tops. Sofia Kenin and Garbine Muguruza wore this look best.
Like the Adidas offerings, Fila's Colorful Play collection, worn by Sofia Kenin, Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova, combined traditional tennis fashion with fresh spring colors.
Coco Gauff wore perhaps the most disappointing outfit, a drab ensemble from New Balance. When New Balance signed the teen sensation, it appeared the company might be making another effort to shed its daddy-wear and soccer-mom sports gear reputation.
However, Gauff's top and skirt looked exactly like something a middle-aged woman might wear in local league match play. The bright top Gauff wears during doubles screams youthful exuberance and far more fitting for one of the most exciting teen stars in sports.
