Serena, Murray Advance in Rain-Shortened Day Two

Jun 28th 2016

After a sunny day one at Wimbledon, Tuesday saw rain interrupt play for the first time in the tournament, forcing some matches from the side courts onto the covered Centre Court. However, nearly half of Tuesday’s schedule has been pushed back to tomorrow where a number of matches will pick up in progress. However, some players were fortunate to beat the weather and their opponent on Day two.

Serena Advances

It was not an easy day at the office for the top-seed, but Serena Williams was solid enough to defeat Amra Sadikovic 6-2, 6-4, and advance to the second round.

Williams’ big weapon was inconsistent as she struggled with her serve and the world no. 148 stayed engaged in the match, which made things interesting in the second set. The American had more double faults than aces on the day. However, with the Swiss native serving to stay in the match at 4-5 in the second set, Williams would break serve and close out the match.

Afterward, she answered any question as to whether she overlooked her opponent, “I never underestimate anyone,” Williams said. “It was a really good match but I don't think it was tougher than I thought. It was definitely tough, but I always expect the best from everyone.”

The world no. 1 will face American Christina McHale in the next round.

Murray Cruises

In a “Battle of the Brits”, second-seeded Andy Murray was impressive in a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 win against Liam Broady.

The world no. 2 came out of the gate fast, racing to a solid lead in the first set as the qualifier struggled to win points. The theme continued for much of the match and an hour and 42 minutes later, Murray advanced.

“I served pretty well. Offensively I thought I did some good stuff. Maybe defensively I could have done a little bit better.” Murray stated. “But the first match is always tricky. Obviously, Liam, we've never played each before although we've practiced a lot and it's not that easy playing someone you know so well, but I did okay.”

Murray dictated points off of the heels of his serve and his 31 winners led the way for the 29-year old. It was the first time that Murray had faced a fellow countryman in a Grand Slam.  He will face Yen-Hsun Lu in the second round.

Wawrinka Eliminates Upstart American

Fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka defeated 18-year old American Taylor Fritz, 7-6, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 on Tuesday, prior to the rain.

It was an erratic performance for the veteran at times as his aggressive game produced 41 unforced errors. But after a tough first-set tiebreak win, he appeared to have taken some wind out of Fritz’s sails as the teen found it difficult to regroup. However, the young American would fight back in the third, winning a fairly comfortable tiebreak. But he could not sustain the momentum and the two-time major champion closed out the match in four sets.

Despite the result, Fritz showed very few nerves during the match, which grabbed Wawrinka’s attention, “He has a big potential,” he said. “For sure he is the future of tennis.”

Fritz entered the match as the youngest player in the draw and gave a good account of himself in the performance. Wawrinka advances to face Juan Martin Del Potro, in what could be an interesting second round match.

Some Notables Advanced Prior to Rain

Nick Kyrgios, Richard Gasquet, and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga were among seeded players who logged wins before the inclement weather. As tournament officials scramble the schedule to complete the first-round on Wednesday, these are a few players who will benefit from a full day off before returning to the court on Thursday.
