Murray, Halep Rally; Radwanska Cruises at Roland Garros

May 25th 2016

Second-round play began at Roland Garros on Wednesday, and most of the favorites advanced with ease. However, one high seed found trouble once again.

Andy Murray

Thanks to the rain that interrupted play in the first round, Andy Murray was on court for the third consecutive day. After a two-day, five-set battle, he had hoped for an easier path in the second round. But that did not happen as the Scot was forced to rally once more in a 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory against Mathias Bourgue of France.

The world No. 164, playing in his first match at a major, often showed the poise of a veteran, pushing the No. 2 seed to the delight of the home crowd. Meanwhile, the lingering effects from his grueling first-round match may have played a role for Murray. After taking the first set, what appeared to be tired-looking shots crept into his game. This resulted in back-to-back sets won by the 22-year-old, and Murray came within a set of elimination once again.

However, the two-time major champion found his second wind in the fourth set, moving quicker around the court. He would take control of the match, but the young Frenchman would not go quietly. Down 1-5 in the fifth set, Bourgue made things interesting once again by winning consecutive games before Murray finally closed the door.

Murray has spent over seven hours on court in his first two matches of the tournament, and he acknowledged the need for an easier day at the office.  “You can’t continue playing matches like that and expect to win the tournament,” he said. “If I can get through the next one, it would be nice to win it a bit quicker.”

While Murray was tested, top-10 seeds Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, and Stan Wawrinka all cruised into the third round from the bottom half of the draw. Likewise, it was a good day for Americans John Isner and Jack Sock, who both advanced in straight sets.

Agnieszka Radwanska

In the women’s draw, second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was solid despite the crowd support for her opponent. She eliminated Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-4 on Suzanne-Lenglen Court.

Radwanska found success attacking Garcia’s first and second serves and broke six times in the match as her opponent struggled holding serve throughout. Her steady counter-punching won the day against the aggressive 22-year-old, who was disappointed in her play afterwards. “I'm very sorry that I couldn't really play the way I wish I would have played,” said Garcia. “I was able to play a few balls, but most of the match I just wasn't there. Not enough. I wasn't able to hit the ball.”

Elsewhere, it was sixth-seeded Simona Halep advancing past Zarina Diyas, 7-5, 6-2. Halep overcame a slow start that put her in an early hole, but she found solid form as the match advanced. “It was very tough in the first set having to come back from 4-1 down,” said Halep. “But I found a better rhythm in the second set, tried to open the court and hit drive volleys.”  She joined fourth-seeded Garbine Muguruza, who also advanced to the third round after a straight-sets victory.

In one of the tournament surprises thus far, American Shelby Rogers advanced to the third round after defeating Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-2. The world No. 93 followed up her first-round upset of 17th-seeded Karolina Pliskova with a strong performance on Wednesday. The result matches her best result at a major, equaling her 2015 U. S. Open performance in which she advanced to the third round as well.
